Monsoon and Winter Solar Output in North India: What Is Normal and What Is a Fault

Saraswati Solar Team · 25/4/2026 · 7 min

Why generation halves in July and again in the January fog, how to protect output, and the symptoms that genuinely need a service call.

Every new solar owner in North India goes through the same two moments: a July week when generation halves, and a January fortnight of fog when it halves again. Neither means the system is faulty.

What a normal year looks like here

March to June are the strongest months, with long days and clear skies. July to September bring cloud cover, though rain also washes the glass and lifts output on the days between showers. October and November are excellent. December and January are weakest, thanks to fog, a low sun angle and short days.

Annual estimates already account for this. A system quoted at roughly 1,500 units per kW per year is averaging strong months against poor ones, so judge performance over a year rather than over a week.

Getting the most out of winter

  • Clean more often. Fog leaves a film that binds dust, and the weak winter sun cannot spare any of it
  • Recheck shadows. The December sun sits low, so parapets, tanks and neighbouring buildings shade areas that were clear in June
  • Shift heavy loads to the middle of the day, when generation peaks between about 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Monsoon care

  • Inspect cable glands, conduits and junction boxes before the first rain
  • Confirm earthing and lightning arrestor continuity — this region gets real lightning activity
  • Retighten structure fasteners; pre-monsoon squalls are what test bolts and clamps
  • After a dust storm, look for cracked glass or shifted modules instead of waiting for the app to report it

When it really is a fault

Call your installer if output drops sharply on a clear day, if one string reads far below another of the same size, if the inverter logs recurring faults, or if generation never recovers after a cleaning. Those are genuine problems. A cloudy week is not.

AMC customers get scheduled cleaning, a pre-monsoon electrical check and a winter performance review, so these questions are answered before they turn into complaints.
