On-Grid vs Off-Grid vs Hybrid Solar: Which System Should You Install?

The battery decision drives your budget more than any panel brand. A practical comparison of the three system types for Indian homes and farms.

The biggest cost decision in a rooftop project is not the brand of panel — it is whether you add batteries. Here is how the three system types differ in practice.

On-grid: cheapest per unit generated

An on-grid system feeds everything it makes into your home and exports the surplus through a net meter. There is no battery, so there is nothing to replace in year six, and the price stays at the standard tiered rate — around ₹65 per watt for a 3 kW system and ₹48 per watt at 10 kW.

The trade-off is that an on-grid inverter shuts down during an outage for lineman safety. If your supply is reasonably reliable, that is a fair price for the lower cost.

Off-grid: independence, at a price

Off-grid systems run entirely on batteries and must be sized for the worst week of the year rather than the average. They make sense for farm houses, tubewell sheds, telecom sites and anywhere extending the grid is expensive. For a normal urban home they cost far more per usable unit than staying connected.

Hybrid: solar, grid and battery together

A hybrid inverter charges a battery bank, runs your loads and still exports surplus where the DISCOM allows it. During an outage the backed-up circuits keep running. Budget roughly ₹15,000 per kW extra for the battery side of a modest hybrid, and considerably more if you want to back up air conditioning rather than fans, lights and the fridge.

Choosing the battery

  • Lithium (LFP): thousands of cycles, deeper usable capacity, compact, higher upfront cost
  • Tubular lead-acid: cheaper today, needs topping up with distilled water, realistically four to six years of life
  • Sizing rule: decide which circuits must stay live and for how many hours, then size the bank. Trying to back up the entire house is what makes hybrid quotations balloon

A simple decision test

Count your outage hours over the last three months. Under an hour a day with a normal load profile: go on-grid and put the savings into a larger array. Frequent or long cuts, medical equipment, a work-from-home setup, or a society with a lift and water pump: hybrid earns its keep. No grid at all: off-grid, sized conservatively.

Adding batteries later

You can retrofit storage, but only if the inverter supports it. If a hybrid is even a possibility in the next few years, say so at the design stage — a hybrid-ready inverter on day one costs far less than replacing a string inverter afterwards.
