The most common home size in our service area, and the smallest that unlocks the full ₹78,000 subsidy. Here is the full arithmetic.
A 3 kW rooftop system is the most common residential size in Punjab, Chandigarh and Haryana, and it is also the smallest size that unlocks the full ₹78,000 subsidy under PM Surya Ghar. Here is what it costs and what it returns.
Indicative price
At our published rate of ₹65 per watt for systems up to 4 kW, a 3 kW on-grid system works out to about ₹1.95 lakh before subsidy. With the full ₹78,000 central subsidy on an eligible residential connection, the net outgo is roughly ₹1.17 lakh.
That covers modules, inverter, mounting structure, cabling, earthing, lightning protection, installation and commissioning. Extra-height structures, long cable runs from roof to meter, or a walkway-cum-shed structure are quoted separately because they genuinely differ from roof to roof.
What it generates
A well-oriented 3 kW array in this region produces roughly 12 to 13 units on a clear day and about 4,000 to 4,500 units a year once monsoon and foggy winter weeks are averaged in. At ₹8 per unit that is ₹32,000 to ₹36,000 of electricity every year.
Payback
Against a net cost near ₹1.17 lakh, most 3 kW households recover their investment in three to four years and keep the savings for the remaining twenty-plus years of module life. Panels carry a 25-year performance warranty; the inverter is the component you should budget to replace once in that period.
Is 3 kW right for you?
- Monthly bill of roughly ₹2,500 to ₹3,500: 3 kW is usually the right fit
- Roof area needed: about 300 square feet of shadow-free space
- Sanctioned load should support the system — we verify this before filing for net metering
- Planning an EV or another AC: size for the load you will have in two years, not today's bill
Before you sign
Confirm the module brand and wattage, the inverter make and warranty, the structure specification (galvanised versus painted MS makes a real difference in our humidity), and who files the subsidy and net metering paperwork. We handle both filings for every residential customer.
